I am often asked why I named a studio Red Region, and why even after closing the brick and\u00a0mortar\u00a0store \u00a0I continue with it.<\/p>\n

The name Red Region came from a poem.
\nIt is one of my most beloved poems.<\/p>\n

The Mid-World by George William (\u201cA. E.\u201d) Russell (1867\u20131935).<\/p>\n

\nYour pains will here be legion
\nAnd joy be death for you.<\/p>\n

\nA turning tide shall flow
\nThrough infinite tones of sorrow

You pass by love unheeding
\nTo gain the goal you long\u2014
\nBut my heart, my heart is bleeding:

\nAs a poem it is perfection. As a painting with words it is a masterpiece. Simple, short, and lovely.
\nMostly though it is something that I identify with.<\/p>\n

Flow<\/strong>\u00a0is the\u00a0mental state<\/a>\u00a0of operation in which a person in an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity. Proposed by\u00a0Mih\u00e1ly Cs\u00edkszentmih\u00e1lyi<\/a>, the\u00a0positive psychology<\/a>\u00a0concept has been widely referenced across a variety of fields.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

According to Csikszentmihalyi, flow is completely focused\u00a0motivation<\/a>. It is a\u00a0single-minded<\/a>\u00a0immersion<\/a>\u00a0and represents perhaps the ultimate in harnessing the\u00a0emotions<\/a>\u00a0in the service of performing and\u00a0learning<\/a>. In flow, the emotions are not just contained and channeled, but positive, energized, and aligned with the task at hand. To be caught in the\u00a0ennui<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0depression<\/a>\u00a0or the agitation of\u00a0anxiety<\/a>\u00a0is to be barred from flow. The hallmark of flow is a feeling of spontaneous\u00a0joy<\/a>, even rapture, while performing a task[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0although flow is also described (below) as a deep focus on nothing but the activity \u2013 not even oneself or one’s emotions.<\/p>\n

Colloquial terms for this or similar mental states include: to be\u00a0on the ball<\/em>,\u00a0in the moment<\/em>,\u00a0present<\/em>,\u00a0in the zone<\/em>,\u00a0wired in<\/em>, or\u00a0in the groove<\/em>.<\/p>\n
