{"id":2147,"date":"2013-03-12T12:36:41","date_gmt":"2013-03-12T19:36:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aarron.com\/flow\/?p=2147"},"modified":"2013-03-12T12:36:42","modified_gmt":"2013-03-12T19:36:42","slug":"ayla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aarron.com\/flow\/2013\/03\/ayla\/","title":{"rendered":"Ayla"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Odd story to this one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarron.com\/flow\/2013\/03\/ayla\/ayla\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aarron.com\/flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/ayla-200x250.jpg\" alt=\"Ayla painting by artist Aarron Laidig of Port Angeles WA\" width=\"200\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aarron.com\/flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/ayla-200x250.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.aarron.com\/flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/ayla-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.aarron.com\/flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/ayla-540x674.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.aarron.com\/flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/ayla.jpg 565w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have had this canvas floating around my life for a few years now.<br \/>\nIt has had a good half dozen paintings started on it I guess.<br \/>\nEach painting that I started either looked like crap or I lost interest in it.<br \/>\nEventually I decided the canvas was cursed and stuck it in my cursed canvasses pile.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason I decided to bring a few (4 actually) cursed canvases from my home to my place of work a month or so ago to just play with when I lacked time for something serious, but had a break (or needed one) from other art.<\/p>\n<p>This canvas became a quick sketch of a group sex scene.<br \/>\nIt had last been a floral still life.<br \/>\nHmmm&#8230; still cursed.<br \/>\nThe next day I used paints already on my pallet (for another one I was working on) to paint over my group sex mess.<br \/>\nIt was just the last of the paint on my pallet, and hardly enough, but I did succeed in killing the image.<br \/>\nThe canvas sat like that for weeks.<br \/>\nIt stared at me with it&#8217;s blotchy abstract messy surface.<br \/>\nThe painting was awesome.<br \/>\nI had accidentally created a beautiful abstract work.<br \/>\nThe composition was fun, and the colors bounced and blended in a way that made me somehow feel alone and expectant at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with creating a beautiful abstract work is that I am not an abstract painter.<br \/>\nI will never be one.<br \/>\nI see no point in it. Abstract art is done as far as I am concerned. All that could be said in that school of art has been said.<br \/>\nNot for me.<br \/>\nI had to see something in it. It had to become something more.<br \/>\nSo&#8230; it sat there.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to a couple days ago.<br \/>\nI am talking with my wife about making slings.<br \/>\nThe type of sling with a small pouch in the middle of two lengths of cord that you spin around and launch rocks or lead.<br \/>\nA deadly weapon that gets very little attention nowadays.<br \/>\nEventually this talk brought us to Jean Auel&#8217;s Earth&#8217;s Children novels, and then to the 1986 movie The Clan of the Cave Bear.<br \/>\nAyla was played by Daryl Hannah.<br \/>\nShe rocks it with a sling in that movie.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m a big Daryl Hannah fan.<\/p>\n<p>Jump ahead to yesterday.<br \/>\nI am looking at my cursed canvas with the fabulous abstract composition on it.<br \/>\nI see the shape of a figure.<br \/>\nI grab the canvas and just loosely start sketching it out with paint and a dry brush.<br \/>\nRed was what I had grabbed to do this sketching.<br \/>\nMy reason was because it was the closest tube of paint to me.<br \/>\nThe form worked. I liked it.<br \/>\nI chose my next colors purposefully, but stuck with the dry brush sketching style.<br \/>\n45 minutes later I had turned my abstract composition into the painting you see above.<br \/>\nI had not consciously been thinking of Ayla as a subject, but I had kept thinking intermittently about slings, the movie, Daryl, and the character of Ayla while doing the painting.<br \/>\nWhen I had finished I realized how much those random thoughts had intruded and influenced my painting.<br \/>\nA very big resemblance to the Daryl Hannah version of Ayla existed in it.<br \/>\nSo&#8230; I titled it Ayla.<\/p>\n<p>Today I share it with you.<br \/>\nI hope you enjoyed the story\/history of this canvas as well as the visuals themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Click the pic (or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarron.com\/flow\/?attachment_id=2150\" title=\"Ayla painting\">HERE<\/a>) to see the painting bigger.<\/p>\n<p>You can get prints of this painting <a href=\"http:\/\/fineartamerica.com\/featured\/ayla-aarron-laidig.html\" title=\"Ayla nude figure painting prints on Fine Art America\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a> on Fine Art America.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Odd story to this one.
